Championing Inclusive Tennis Across Essex

James Biggane’s passion for tennis is matched only by his commitment to making the sport accessible for everyone. Recently named Disability Coach of the Year in Essex, James is at the forefront of delivering inclusive tennis sessions that bring lasting impact to children and adults with disabilities across the county.

A full-time coach for nearly 25 years, James now leads weekly sessions across five local schools, working with pupils who have a wide range of disabilities.

“I love coaching the children and seeing them smile,” James says. “They really enjoy the sessions and when I’m away, I hear they’re disappointed to miss out. That says it all.”

James’s sessions don’t just build tennis skills. More than that, they offer consistency, enjoyment, and confidence in an environment where everyone is welcomed and supported.

Reaching All Players

While James is widely recognised for his work in disability tennis, his coaching reaches far farther. He works with players of all levels, from beginners picking up a racket for the first time to county-standard competitors.

“Some of the kids and adults I coach in inclusive sessions are genuinely very good at tennis,” he adds. “More importantly, it brings them real joy—and that’s what it’s all about.”

James has worked closely with the National Tennis Association, who help run his weekly inclusive sessions, in partnership with local councils to ensure accessible tennis is available to all.

“NTA has been a huge help. They’ve helped make the Wednesday sessions a success and helped secure funding to keep them running. They’re a great organisation doing great work with the special needs community.”

Recognition That Inspires

James’s recent award is a proud moment—not just personally— but as a reflection of the growing movement towards inclusivity within the sport.

“It’s really important to me to be recognised in this way,” he says. “I’m proud of my work and proud to be part of what the NTA is building. Recognition like this shows how valuable inclusive tennis is—and how far it’s come.”

His message to those who may feel unsure about taking that first step into tennis is simple: “Just give it a try. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at—there’s a place for you in this sport.”

Inclusive tennis is transforming lives in Essex—and thanks to coaches like James Biggane, every court is becoming a place where ability is no barrier, and everyone belongs.
